  1. Spanish Threat from FloridaThe War of Jenkin’s Ear SS8H2 The student will analyze the colonial period of Georgia’s history. b. Evaluate the Trustee Period of Georgia’s colonial history, emphasizing the role of the Salzburgers, Highland Scots, malcontents, and the Spanish threat from Florida.

  3. The War of Jenkins’ Ear • Jenkins was a British sailor caught by the Spanish plundering Spanish goods. • He was taken prisoner and his ear was cut off. • Because Jenkins’ ship was covered under a Letter of Marque, the British came to his defense.

  4. Meanwhile, in Georgia • General James Oglethorpe is told to attack St. Augustine. • He fails to take the town and retreats to St. Simon’s Island- Fort Frederica • Spanish try to take Frederica but are met by Oglethorpe’s men and Highland Scots. • This battle- the Battle of Bloody Marsh- was a British victory and ended the Spanish threat to the Georgia colony.

  6. Evaluate the Trustee Period The Battle of Bloody Marsh ended the Spanish threat to the British colonies. Georgia was a success as a buffer colony.   7. Journal Entry Look over your Trustee Period Chart. Do you think the Trustee Period was a success or a failure? Justify your answer.
