First, Find the main idea • This step is critical! • With a timed writing, you have to know the main idea before reading, so that you can spot the details you will use, AS YOU READ. • This saves time and allows you to begin formulating your essay earlier.
Watch for clues as you pre-read. The writer will repeat words, phrases and ideas to focus on the Central Point/Main Idea. These words will show up in the Title, First and Last Paragraph. These words will let you know how the author feels about the Main Idea. Read the title, the preview and the first paragraph. On your sheet of paper, make a list of repeated words or ideas. How does the author feel about what he is writing about?
