When did it start? • The studio system started in the 1920’ but really came about in the 1930’s.
The golden age • What they call the “golden age "occurred between the 1930’s and the 1950’s.
Where is it located? • Major studio’s are located in Hollywood on the west coast. It was chosen over the east coast due to light.
Major studios? • MGM • Warner's • Paramount • 20th Century Fox • RKO • The Little Three • Universal • Columbia
How did they make money? • The majors made money by exhibiting their own films (exhibit-to present for others to see.) • A tightly controlled industry maximized profits and minimize risk.
Labor • The staff at all levels are contracted to the studio that means writers, stars director and crew • If there is no work some studios hire independents, witch are people that get called up by studios to do a job and get paid with no contract.
Studios impact? • Studios had a major impact over the stars, managing their publicity, how they looked, what they wore, what roles they got and how they lived. Often able to control any scandal and surprise negative publicity.
