Equal Ratios and Unit Rates • Common Core Standard • CCSS.Math.Content.6.RP.A.2 Understand the concept of a unit rate a/b associated with a ratio a:b with b ≠ 0, and use rate language in the context of a ratio relationship • Homework - Pg 655, 8 to 21 - Test on Wednesday
Warm Up • Ratio: A ratio is a comparison of two quantities. It can be written as a:b or a /b. • The quantities in the ratio are called terms. • Explain: Rita’s class has 14 girls and 16 boys. How do the ratios 14:16 and 14:30 describe Rita’s class?
Equal Ratios • Like equivalent fractions, you can find equal ratios by multiplying or dividing by same number • - Example: Give three equal ratios for • 8 to 5 • 6:10 • 12 to 60
Rates and Unit Rates • Rate is a ratio that compares two quantities with different units. Example: miles per hour - UNIT RATE: If the comparison is to 1 unit, the rate is called a unit rate.
Guided Practice • Write Unit rate for • 300 miles in 5 hrs • 250 calories in 10 crackers • 120 students to 6 teachers
Guided Practice • $12 for 3 books • $375 for 30 hours • Which is the better buy? • One gallon if milk for $1.99 or ½ gallon of milk for $0.98 • $3.96 for 36 oz of cheese or $6.30 for 42 oz of cheese
Independent Practice • Which is the lower rate? • 2,133 km for 6 hours or 1,498 in 7 hours • 144 students on 3 buses or 208 students in 4 buses.
Enrichment • The ancient Greeks believed that rectangles with a length to width ratio of approximately 1.618:1 were most pleasing to the eye. They called this ratio as Golden Ratio and used it to design Parthenon. • Draw two rectangles, one with the golden ratio and see if it appeals more to you?
Closure • Remember: Fractions and Ratios are different • Equal Ratios • Rates and Unit rates.
