What Is A Pediatrician? A pediatrician is someone who examine patients, order, perform and interprets diagnostic tests, and examine patients regularly to assess their growth and developments. Pediatricians also prescribe or administer treatment, therapy, medication, vaccination and other specialized medical care to treat or prevent illness and disease. As you all may know, pediatrician’s patients are infants and children.
Day-To-Day Activites • Meet parents and patients • Gather information and conduct examinations to identify health problems • Discuss treatments with parents and patients - Discussions may include recommendations, medical procedures, and references to other specialist (if needed).

Education in General • As a pediatrician you will ALWAYS be learning. • 4 years of undergraduate courses at a college or university -which will get you a BS, BA, or Bachelor’s Degree • Then you will attend 4 years of Medical School • Then you’ll have 3 years of residency training • After 3 years of residency you are now a pediatrician and “eligible” to become “certified” in pediatrics
Education: High School • Classes: Basic Sciences ( biology, chemistry, physics, algebra, geometry, calculus if possible) • Classes: Humanities ( English, a foreign language) • Get involved in high school charity organizations • TIP: Develop good study habits in high school and be involved.
Education: College • Most students take a “Premed” curriculum, which includes some basic science courses • Students simply need to fulfill the basic science course requirements that most medical schools recommend. • These include: Biology- 1-2courses of basic genetics, 1 course of basic microbiology and molecular biology Chemistry- 1-2 courses in basic organic chemistry Physics- 1 basic course Math- 2 courses in calculus
Education: Medical School • First two years are focused on basic medical science. Courses: human anatomy, physiology, chemistry, microbiology, pharmacology, neuroanatomy, etc. • Second two years are focused on clinical sciences where you get “hands-on” experience with patients Courses: Internal Medicine, Radiology, Cardiology Surgery, Emergency Medicine, OB/GYN, Pediatrics, etc.
Education: Residency • Once done with Medical School, you’re now an official doctor • Most difficult 3 years of your training is your residency • Emotional and physical challenges
Salary • National average: $158,170 per year • The average Pediatrician salary: $77.60 per hour • Lowest 10% earn is $40.79 per hour • Upper 10% earn is $80.00 per hour
Skills • Basic skills- listening, not interrupting, asking good questions, pros & cons of difficult ways to solve a problem • Problem Solving- noticing a problem and figuring it out • People system- picking best options
