250 million years ago there was a supercontinent called Pangea. A supercontinent is an extremely large land mass. Pangea is made up of our countries. If you look at a map of the world, you’ll notice that some countries/continents/islands look like puzzle pieces that belong to each other. Alfred Wegener was the first person to come up with this theory, but no one believed hid theory, so he set out to find evidence of this super continent. • Here is the four pieces of evidence he found… The theory of continental drift
If you look at South America and Africa, you can see that they look like they belong to each other. The coastlines of the continents appear to fit like pieces of a puzzle. 1. Apparent fit of continents
During Wegeners research he became particularly interested in fossils, specifically the mesosaurus. He was interested in this prehistoric animal because in can only live in shallow fresh water. Fossils of the meesosaurus were found in these two places. The only way for these two fossil to be in this place in different places is that that once these two continents were attached 2. Identical rocks and mountains have been found on different parts of the world, which must mean that these were once part of each other until the continents parted resulting in mountain ranges and rock separating too. 3. Rock & mountain correlation
It doesn’t make sense that glacial striations hove been found in places with a hot climate does it? Or coal being found in subzero temperatures? The only logical explanation 4. Paleoclimate data
San andreas fault plate tectonics The San Andreas fault lies upon the meeting point of the Pacific Plate and the North American Plate, the two plates move in opposite directions causing many earthquakes to happen. The San Andreas fault is a slip strike fault. Meaning the two plates are moving past one another, causing shearing. When the two plate are rubbing against each other, it results in earthquakes.
Many earthquakes happen along the San Andreas fault all the time, but one on the most notable earthquakes is the San Francisco earthquake with an estimated magnitude of 7.8. the san Francisco earthquake in 1906 18th of April on a Wednesday morning, an earthquake happened resulting in a devastating fire that lasted for several days. Around 3,000 people were killed by the earthquake as well as 80% of the city was destroyed. 28,000 building were destroyed, 225,000 people were left homeless Largest earthquake on the san andreas fault
North America lays upon the North American Plate. In 150 million years, north America will be dragged to Eurasia where they will become attached.
