  2. Conventional Warfare • Characterised by opposing professional armies • WWI, WW2, Falklands

  3. Guerilla Warfare • No defined front line • Often a civilian army • Hit and run tactics • Using the local geography to hide • Vietnam, Afghanistan

  4. Nuclear War • The use of weapons that cause indiscriminate, large scale destruction • Panicked the world at height of the Cold War • Mutually Assured Destruction • Nagasaki, Hiroshima, WW2

  5. Biological/Chemical • Use of chemical warfare commenced in WW1 with use of mustard gas. Israel fired phosphorous bombs against Lebanon • Biological war is the use of deadly germs. Not widespread due to difficulty to control. Example is anthrax. Often linked to possible terrorist acts.

  6. Terrorism • Used to promote fear amongst a population concerning the possibility of an attack. Not always associated with a state of war • Usually carried out by small extremist groups. • Sept 11, Bali, London, Madrid • IRA, Al Qaeda, Jemah Islameeh

  7. Civil War • When the domestic population of a country is divided and fighting each other. • Usually fought for control of the country. • American, Vietnam
