Assessing The Mandated Training Needs Of The Business Community In Region Six Project Update JUNE 2007 Josepha Baca
AGENDA • Objective • Steps • Outcomes • Future Steps
WHAT IS THE OBJECTIVE OF THIS PROJECT? To scan the business community in Region Six and assess the certification and recertification training needs of our region.
STEP ONE • An environmental scan was conducted within the business community of Region Six to help identify existing occupations that typically require mandated training in order to begin and/or maintain employment.
STEP TWO • Relevant data was extrapolated from the state and federal Departments of Labor for the purpose of attempting to narrow the scope to demand occupations traditionally targeted by community colleges.
STEP THREE • Reports from the University of California at Santa Barbara’s Economic Forecast Project was reviewed to further assist in narrowing the scope to demand occupations within the targeted service areas.
STEP FOUR Interviews and meetings were conducted with: • Local business leaders • Industry professionals • Appropriate community college contacts
OUTCOME 1 • There are presently hundreds of certification and recertification training requirements across industries.
OUTCOME 2 Given the limitations of this project, in terms of purpose and available resources, the capacity of community colleges within Region Six to respond effectively to these recertification needs must be clarified (perimeters) before a relevant listing of targeted occupations can be produced for each campus.
OUTCOME 3 Direct input from contract education operators within the Region is needed in order to help identify the specific areas of training that campuses consider feasible.
THE NEXT STEP? We need you to help define the parameters of this project by completing this short questionnaire!
1. Please circle the occupations that would be of interest in your service area
Question 2: Please list any other occupations that are relevant to your service area? Question 3: Please identify someone in your office that I can contact to get further information?
