What is the imperfect tense? • You use the imperfect tense to describe what you have been doing in the past for a long period of time. E.g.: • I used to eat baguettes • I used to visit France every summer • This is the ‘used to' tense, and it is when you have done something you don’t do anymore. (Not a one off action)
how the weather was.. We use the imperfect tense to describe how the weather was in the past.. i.e. Hier, il faisait froid! Il faisait chaud It was hot Il pleuvait It was raining Il neigeait It was snowing
past tense using -ing You use the Imperfect tense when you use ‘ing’ in the past. I.e. I was singing I was drinking I was arriving Je mangeais au Macdo quand mon amie est arrivée. Goes to… Je chantais Je buvais J’arrivais
How to form it You choose your subject and you use the ‘nous’ form of the verb. Then add the endings as shown je ....................... ais tu ....................... ais il ....................... ait nous .......................ions vous ....................... iez ils .......................aient
i.e. Take the NOUS form of the PRESENT TENSE, and take off the –ONS to get the Imperfect stem. Je Mangeons ais I used to eat Il Parlons ait He used to talk Nous Finissons ions We used to finish
