2. Dedication • This presentation is designed to prove the dedication and sacrifice of the OCVTS staff. • Countless hours of valuable time have been invested in making OCVTS the most dominant academic school district in Ocean County and New Jersey.

3. What is the Envirothon? • The New Jersey Envirothon competition is a one-day event that takes place in May. • Teams will be tested on environmental topics through hands-on interactive problem-solving at five testing stations. • Test questions may cover any information in the study guide and suggested resource materials or web links. • The contest will consist of hands-on questions along with some true/false, multiple choice and fill-in-the-blanks. • There will be 30 minutes allowed at each station. Team presentations will last 10 minutes.

4. What is Envirothon? • The team that best demonstrates a comprehensive understanding of natural resources, as well as teamwork and communication skills, moves on to represent New Jersey in the Canon Envirothon competition which is North America's Largest High School Environmental Education Competition. • This multi-day event further tests the team's understanding of the environment and involves teams from all regions of the United States and Canada. • 2 Advisors – Practice two hours a weeks plus planning time outside of school = 100+ hours

12. Science Olympiad- MATES • Approximately 13 events comprise the regional competition, 26 events comprise the state competition. Highly competitive tournament, most schools have been attending since 1993. • I have coached it for 2 years, unsure of how many years we participated prior, at least 2 more with Mr. Lanagan. • Always finish within the top half of the regional competition, which allows for entry to the state competition. • Medals awarded to the top 6 places at the State Competition. • 18 students may be on each team.

13. New Jersey Science Olympiad: • New Jersey Science Olympiad has been on the leading edge of educational innovations since 1993. These innovations include high academic standards; demonstration of skills through performance testing; learning through hands-on, minds-on activities; cooperative learning through events that require teamwork; improved self-concept through success in achieving high standards and making applications and connections to the real world. • New Jersey Science Olympiad events are closely aligned with New Jersey Science Education Standards and include strong components for problem solving, critical thinking and use of technology. Science Olympiad also portrays the close relationship between teaching and assessment. Assessment tasks are developmentally appropriate for young children, and include recognition of students' physical skills and cognitive abilities. Source: New Jersey Science Olympiad Web Page

15. Science Olympiad- MATES • Typically spend about 50 hours on this activity, approximately 45 hours with students, 5 hours alone planning.

17. Newspaper Club Our History A student publication was created in 2002 called the MATES Messenger. When Ms. Minnier came on board in 2003, she took the helm, kept the name, and it has been smooth sailing since.

Goals of our club • To inform the student body of upcoming opportunities, competitions, and events at MATES and in the local community • To inform the student body of the results of these events • To work with deadlines • To introduce students to “ethics” in the field of journalism • To report on events in our local community • To improve student’s grammar and sentence structure • To promote clarity in writing • To work as a team • To hone editing skills and photography skills • To give students a creative outlet

As the advisor… One must be dedicated and organized… and willing to put in the time… The newspaper club meets twice a month during lunch. ~ 20 meeting x 30 minutes = 600 minutes= 10 hours The newspaper club meets after school = 3 publications ~ 2 hours for 4 days = 1 publication… to create 3 pubs. = 24 hours The advisor must do the final edit of the newspaper. ~ 2/edition = 6 hours Total number of hours = ~40 hours/year

Various Personal Expenses Incurred(over four years) • $50-75- food, supplies for dances (mostly 2007 and 2008 Winter Semi Formal) • $60- $80 in gas money spent on scouting prom locations (not including tolls on Parkway) • Hours spent after school or during the weekend spent planning events, especially the prom (not counting hours spent during prep period) • Used personal credit card to secure deposits and pay for prom decorations (I was reimbursed after the fact)

History • Mr. MATES refreshments 08-09 school year • Ran Mr. MATES during 2010 and 2011 • Practices and meeting every day during lunch for approximately 2 months • Obtaining locations, insurance documentation, etc • Class made over $1000 this year! • Other fundraisers • Prom • Meetings 2-3 times a week for approdimately 2 months • Trips to location in Lakewood, NJ • Various phone calls and emails to cooridnate with location, DJ, etc.

History • Students create every page of the yearbook from scratch, using an online site from the yearbook company • Cover is artwork done by a student • I have to • organize Photography for headshots (staff and students) • organize Club information • Verify students names and information included in the final product • Contact company regarding price • Ship via trackable UPS all artwork

31. Time Invested • Time in school: luchtime, prep, in between classes (no after school meetings due to busing constraints) • Outside of school: approximately 40 hours a year, mostly in January – March

37. History • First place in Ocean County Math League since 2005. • Last year had top contestant in county: Ryan Taglang ($500 scholarship provided by OCML) • This year had three place contestant in county: Tommy Z • Perfect scores by several students on TrigStar test last year

Time Invested • Ocean County Math League • Discussion of upcoming contest dates and responsibilities among advisors, distributing info to students, grading contests = ~ 10 hours • About 3 hours per competition (6 per year) plus awards ceremony and planning = ~ 25 hours • New Jersey Math League • 6 contests conducted during lunch = ~ 3 hours • Scoring, entering grades and feedback, creating email lists and distributing info to students = ~10 hours • TrigStar and AMC tests • Not done yet this year, but roughly 5 hours additional spent here annually • Total time = ~45 hours outside of school, 3 hours inside school

Human Rights Club • Mission Statement: to help our local communities and to raise awareness and money for human rights violations occurring around the world to aid in their prevention. • Club meets twice a month • Estimated hours of service • With students: 40 +hours • Without students: 10+ hours
