Go Green in Dialysis! A campaign to achieve more environmentalsustainability in dialysis care
Significant increase of HD dialysis patients in the last decades Go Green in Dialysis! In 2011 more than2 millions HD patients will be treated worldwide Estimation based on patient development of the last years
Dialysis has an increasing impact on the environment Water consumption Electricity consumption Clinical waste incineration Go Green in Dialysis!
Average environmental burden per treatment*: ca. 400 litres Water ca. 10 kWh Electricity ca. 5 litres Infectious waste Go Green in Dialysis! * = estimation within NephroCare clinics for 2008
Environmental impact of all HD dialysis in the world means: Water consumption: ~ 125.000.000.000 litres p.a. Electricity consumption ~ 3.000.000.000 kWh p.a. Infectious waste (for incineration) ~ 1.500.000.000 litres p.a. Estimated 312.000.000 treatments in 2011 worldwide Go Green in Dialysis!
Water consumption of 125.000.000.000 litres means: 50.000 water fillings for Olympic swimming pools (standard Olympic pool: 50 m x 25 m x 2 m = 2.500 m³)
Electricity consumption of 3.000.000.000 kWh means: 1.100 wind generators are dedicated only for dialysis (if electricity would be produced only with wind energy ...) Wind mill data from Germany (2008): average power (gross) 1.177 KWh per wind generator, efficiency 20,54%, duration 8.760h p.a., source: Wikipedia
Infectious waste (for incineration) of 1.500.000.000 litres means: = 37.500 waste containers = 262 Kilometer length (if placed one by one) Size of high volume “Abrollcontainer”: 40 m³ (7m x 2,4m x 2,4m)
Nurses can influence the environmental burden of dialysis! Create awareness Create actions to reduce environmental burden Development of an Environmental Guideline Go Green in Dialysis!
Go Green in Dialysis! A campaign to achieve more environmental sustainability in dialysis care Survey at the Conference 2009 Project Team set up Project framework finalization Project roll-out 2010 Project evaluation 2011 Guidelines Launch 2012 Project objectives: • Create awareness for environmental aspects in dialysis • Change habits for a more “environmental friendly” dialysis • Prepare environmental guidelines for dialysis
Pre-project Survey • Please fill in the questionnaire • 10 questions • Leave them at EDTNA/ERCA booth • Pick-up a small gift • We appreciate your time… …and value your feedback!
Thankyou! Vielen Dank! Merci beaucoup! Muchas gracias! Grazie Mille! Ευχαριστούμε ! Děkujimockrát!
