Communicating Observations Microworlds Lesson 2
Think & Wonder • Learning to make careful, detailed observations is one of the most important skills you will learn in this unit. • But to be really valuable, your observations also must be recorded and communicated to others clearly, accurately, and completely. *

Observations Pieces of information that come to you through your five senses. • What are your five senses? • What kind of information do you gather from each sense? • Today we will mainly be using our sense of sight. *
Properties • Properties are the observed characteristics of an object. • What are characteristics? • If you were holding these flowers, which properties would you describe using your senses? *

Directions • Using your hand lens, collect data by observing the object. • Write the name of the object on Activity Sheet 2. • Write a description of your object under “Observable Properties” • Draw a sketch of what the object looks like. * data
Record Exchange • Fold Activity Sheet lengthwise on the dotted line, so that the column marked “Name of the Object” is hidden. • Exchange papers with a nearby student. • Write a conclusion, based upon the data, by writing the name of the object. * conclusion
Communicate With Your Partner • Discuss your reasons for your identifications. • Compare the two papers • What are some similarities? • What are some differences? *
Class Discussion • What qualities of the object made it easy to identify that object from its description? • Did using more than one sense aid in the identification of an object? • Would anyone like to share an exceptional description with the class?*
