2. Mission • Lynn CTC’s mission is to collaboratively promote a safe, healthy, and substance abuse free environment that ensures positive youth, family, and community development.

Coalition Structure (continued) Part of the Solution • The CTC includes a Youth Council, Part of the Solution (P.O.S.) • POS is comprised of approximately 25 - 30 Lynn teens from diverse backgrounds who care about making Lynn a better place to live • Their mission is to serve as positive role models and to help reduce alcohol, tobacco, and other drug use and violence among teens, and to make our neighborhoods safer places

7. Lynn CTC’s Activities and Accomplishments 2011-2012

Initiatives and Activities • Conducted research on marijuana use to identify current trends and address growing concerns about medical marijuana use • Creation of strategic plans to address concerns related to teen suicide, violence and bullying, and teen pregnancy • Organized and facilitated trainings for CTC members on use of social media, teen suicide identification and prevention, and medical marijuana • Created resource guide for teens addressing suicide prevention • New funding received to address violence prevention involving provider partnerships and intensive case management

Initiativesand Activities (Cont) • Re-administered YRBS (youth survey in May 2012 to approximately 7000 middle and high school students in Lynn to identify current trends and concerns and progress since last administered in 2010 • Third annual prom parent forums held to increase parent awareness of underage drinking risks, social host liability, and prescription drug abuse. More than 500 parents attended.

Initiatives and Activities (Cont) • Maintained safe prescription drug disposal program at the Lynn police station and organized local events on National Prescription Drug Take Back days • Training active users and individuals in recovery on risk factors for overdose, overdose prevention, and responding to overdoses • Working with local health providers to increase use of statewide prescription monitoring system

Initiativesand Activities (continued) • Continued use of strategies for reducing youth access to alcohol, including: - Compliance checks, with focus on use of fake IDs - Sticker shock campaigns - Shoulder tap surveys on adults to assess whether they will buy alcohol for minors - Media activities to raise awareness of underage drinking and consequences of providing alcohol to minors, including youth created PSAs Addressing sale of other tobacco products packaged to attract youth, as well as K2 (synthetic marijuana)

Initiatives and Activities (continued) Youth Council members have continued to work with the local police and adult volunteers to ensure compliance with laws preventing the sale of alcohol to minors: • Compliance checks have generally yielded high rate of compliance (about 95%) • Experimented with use of bogus IDs (valid IDs with age off by at least 12 years, unacceptable forms of ID such as expired IDs, obviously fake IDs such as males using female ID) • Compliance rate was reduced to 47%

Initiatives and Activities (continued) • Youth members organized community wide events designed to provide opportunities for positive, youth-oriented activities and community connectedness, including: Relay for life- A group of 24 teens raised over $1,200 to donate to the American Cancer Society. Basketball Tournament- 15 teams competed in honor of a beloved friend who passed away this past summer.

14. Initiatives and Activities (continued) Open Arms of L.O.V.E – Loving Others Voices Everyday Educated teens on the issue of suicide and how to prevent it. H.A.L.T – 150+ teens come together to learn about community opportunities in Lynn and “Speak Now” about issues they find important. Mini-Grant – 5 community organizations submitted applications to P.O.S and after scoring them and holding interviews. 3 Organizations were chosen: - Lynn English Friends of Rachel - Lynn Tech Peer Mentors - K.A.Y.A.

15. Be Your Own Superhero! • Media Campaign to educate teens on the consequences of underage drinking • Bracelets, Posters, Buttons, T-shirts • PSA • 87% of high school students reported seeing the campaign at school or in the community

16. New Initiatives • Youth survey data led to focus on other areas besides substance abuse prevention, including prevention of teen pregnancy, teen suicide, obesity, and violence/bullying. • New subcommittees established to identify priorities within new areas of focus that engaged in strategic planning to identify evidence based approaches to reduce risk factors • Creating a sustainability plan for the CTC and for the opiate overdose prevention initiative to continue activities beyond current funding

New Initiatives (continued) • Sustainability for the CTC will focus on: • Continued coordination and collaboration through regular meetings - Data collection - Maintaining the parent prom initiative • Identifying which activities can be institutionalized, shared, or passed on to other organizations - Fundraising

New Initiatives (continued) • Sustainability for the opiate overdose prevention initiative will include: • Training prescribers to increase use of the prescription monitoring program • Creating training videos for behavioral health clinicians and prescribers on overdose risk, prevention, and management
