  3. What is eMentoring? • Secure online help, advice and guidance • Inclusive • Impartial • Individual • Informative Did you know? The word ‘mentor’ comes from the name of a character in Greek mythology – Mentor was the trusted guide to Telemachus, the son of Odysseus.

  4. The Role of eMentors and Peer Mentors Learners at the heart of the system receive advice, guidance, learning support and pastoral help eMentors available live 8am to 8pm – but answer calls asynchronously too Learners ask for help when needed Peer mentors chat online

Case Studies ‘I’m not a cowboy’, June, 2005 “hi howz u? just thought I shuld message u. once agen I’m sry about getting u involved I still feel as if I need to cut but not as much, I still cnt talk 2 mrs face 2 face but I’m getting there I stud up to sum1 is well which I havent been able 2 do :P I’m really pleased about that. But now and then I get called names but everythink is going really well thxs 4 all your help I cnt thank u enough !!  I betta go – message bac” ‘I’m not a cowboy’ has been coming to the eMentor team with problems she has experienced around self-harm. She has recently agreed to go and seek the help of her school counsellor, something she had flatly refused at first.

  9. Case Study Tich, Jan 2005 “thanks for making me a peer mentor – I am going to set up some communities to talk to people about sport” ‘Tich’ has cerebral palsey and suffers from frequent fits. His mother is a widow, his father died of cancer. Tich talks with the eMentors regularly about his own school work. He sees being a peer mentor as a useful addition to his CV.

  10. Case Studies Darkness Angel, Oct 2005 “I just want to say thanks for all the help for my coursework and that. It’s hard 4 me and I ffeal stupid sometimes and you give me lots of help and stuff and don’t get cross” Darkness Angel has behavioural difficulties, and was problematic at first online. She turns to the eMentors regularly now for help with learning and pastoral issues – or just for a chat.
