What is a Theme? • A theme is a universal idea that encompasses the meaning or message of a piece of literature. • Universal ideas are ideas that all humans can relate to.

Universal Idea: Betrayal Universal Idea: Forgiveness • U • Universal Idea: Betrayal • Ask yourself, What did the author want to say about betrayal? • Theme Statement: Betrayal can ruin lives • Universal Idea: Forgiveness • What point was the author trying to make about forgiveness? • Theme Statement:Forgiveness is liberating (freeing)

It identifies what the author is trying to say about a topic such as superficiality.
