  2. Persuasive Text • Needs a Controlling Idea • Must take a side/positionFOR or AGAINST an issue • Needs a counter argument • The goal is to convince the reader to agree, believe, or do something

  3. Examples of controlling ideas • Katy Jr. High should allow students to chew gum on campus. • There are many reasons why it is important to study before a test. • I should be able to spend the night at Sally’s on Friday night.

  4. Picking good reasons • The reasons you choose must be strong. • You must be able to elaborate on each of your reasons. • Two strong reasons are better than listing a lot of reasons without elaboration.

  5. What is a counter argument? • You have to get inside your reader’s mind. • Predict what your opponent is going to say…then offer a solution. • Basically answer their argument before they have the chance to make it. • This is the ONLY way you will convince them.

  6. Examples of counter argument • Ex. -- I know that many principals would argue that gum causes a big mess around campus, but if they invested in more trashcans, students would be more inclined to use them. • Ex.– I understand that you think if I spend the night at Sally’s we won’t get good sleep, but we promise to turn off the lights by eleven and go to sleep. Sally’s mom will come check to make sure we are asleep by 11:30 as well.

  7. Transitions are necessary • Effective transitions help to make your essay flow. • You need transitions between sentences and paragraphs. • You can not jump from one idea to another.

  8. Common Persuasive Transitions • Use “and” category transitions when you are giving your reasons • Additionally, Also, In addition, As well, Furthermore… • Use “but” category transitions when you are counter arguing • However, Although, On the contrary, While, Understandably…
