THE TAIGA IS A TERRESTRIAL ECOSYSTEM • A terrestrial ecosystem continuously changes: it has a beginning, followed by various stages of development during which changes in the characteristic of the vegetation and of the living things that inhabit the ecosystem the take place. Ecological succession refers to the different stages of different stages of development of an ecosystem from when it starts to form.
THE TAIGA • Thistype of forestisfound in verycoldregionswhichhavelongwinterswith heavy snowfall and wet,temperatesummers.Taigaforestscover 15% of theEarth´ssurface: theyextendnorth of a latitude of 45% and coveralmosttheentirenorthernhemisphere.Themaintypes of treesfound in theseforests are conifers. • Itisdifficultfordecomposerstofunction in theseforests,becausetheleaves of thetrees are stremelyhard and thetemperatures in theseregions are verylow: thismeansthatthethetransformation of organicmatterinto mineral matteris a veryslowprocess.Forthisreason,thesoilisrichin humusbutpoorin mineral matter.Treesdon´tgrowverytall in the taiga and there are notverymanyshrubs,butthere are menylichens and mosses. • The taiga isscarce in Spain:itisonlyfound in highmountainareas, mainly in thenorth.
