Background • In 1803,when the United State bought the Louisiana Territory from France. • In 1819,in the Adams-Onis Treaty, the United State agreed to drop any further claim to the region.
People Involved • Sam Houston was elected president of Texas in September of 1836. • General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna became president of Mexico in 1833. • Davy Crockett was a backwoodsman. • Moses Austin was a businessman who had developed a mining operation in Missouri.
Facts • In 1819,the Adams-Onis Treaty agreed to drop further claim to the region. • In 1821,Moses Austin receives land grand in Texas. • In 1823 to 1825, the Mexico passed three colonization laws. • In 1830 the Americans in Texas over numbered Mexicans.
People In Texas History • Stephen F. Austin was given the name “Father of Texas” cause of his leadership in the populating of Mexican territory of Texas.
Change • In December 1835,the Texans scored an important victory. San Antonio included more than 100 Tejanos. Captain Juan Seguin was an outspoken champion of the Texans demand for independence. The Texans had problem, with Mexico withdrawal some Texans left thinking that they won the war.
Effect • In February 1836 Santa Anna marched north. Texans only had 180 soldiers to face Santa Anna’s army of several thousand. The defenders of the Alamo kept Santa Anna’s army at bay with rifle fire.
The Battle of San Jacinto • On April 21, a surprise attack on the Mexican camp. • They killed more than 600 soldiers and captured about 700 and they leader (Santa Anna). • May 14,1836 Santa Anna signed a treaty that recognized the independence of Texas.
Impact Today • In 1844 the feeling of Manifest Destiny was growing throughout the country. • On December 29,1845 Texas officially became a state of the United States.
