  1. Texas Independence

  2. Timeline of Events • Mexican independence - 1821 • Immigration of Anglos into territory - started in 1820s • Americans agree to uphold Mexican Constitution of 1824 • Mexico outlawed slavery - 1829 • Santa Anna took over - 1833 • Overthrew Constitution of 1824 • War in Texas began as a Civil War between Federalists (Mexicans and Americans who wanted the Constitution back) and Santa Anna • Texas declared independence - 1836 • Texas won the war - 1845 • U.S. annexed Texas and it became the 28th state → Led to Mexican-American War

  3. Essential Question: Why did Texas declare independence from Mexico in 1836? • Were these honorable men, fighting for freedom, or greedy slaveholders? • What evidence supports your position? • Once Texas declares and wins its independence, is the U.S. free to annex it? Why would Mexico object to the U.S. annexation of Texas?

  4. Remember the Alamo • Why was this so important? • Used anti-immigrant sentiment to paint the Mexicans in a very negative light • Why did we care? • Desire for a pro-slavery constitution in Mexico • Needed as we expanded our land
