  2. Meet the Teach • My background – Mr. Denlinger • My background – Mogi-Sensei

  3. Attendance • Done within the first fifteen minutes of class in the morning and again after the students return from lunch.

  4. Behavior Management • In second grade we are trying to promote independence, responsibility, positivity, and accountability. • Classroom Community – • Class meetings. • Student Jobs. • Suggestion Box. • Problem Solvers: Your child might be asked to fill out a blue problem solver sheet for an incident that happened during the day that broke a school rule.

  5. Homework • Goes home every Thursday and is due back on Wednesday. There will be a cover page on the first packet that outlines the expectations when completing a homework packet.

  6. Home Connections • Home Connections-From this point forward the home connections will be part of the homework assignment and will need to be completed and returned. • Games are exempt.

  7. Homework • Nightly Reading: both independently and orally. We are working on reading with expression and fluency. We are also working on comprehension. Be sure to ask your child to read a page out loud to you and when your child is done reading for the night, ask them to retell what they read in their own words.

  8. Homework • English: Begins October 13th. • Japanese: Begins October 20th. • What to do if your child misplaces their homework packet: • In English, if your child misplaces their packet they are expected to create a new one with similar material, with your help, and hand in that packet on its due date. • Most English homework will be completed in a Homework Composition book. • In Japanese, re-creating a packet is a little more difficult, but reading a supplemental piece of writing is expected and an adult needs to sign off that they did their reading for the week.

  9. English – End of Year Writing Goals • Write a five sentence paragraph with a clear topic; beginning, middle and end; use contractions; with a sense of the writer’s voice; spelling most high-frequency words correctly. • Rubric will be online.

  10. Writing • Letters. • Poems. • Animal report/Non-fiction. • How-To. • Free Writing – student selected creative writing. • Writing games. • Student of the Week – compliment card.

  11. Spelling and Grammar • Both are integrated into Reading and Writing. • Students works in two separate workbooks, practicing: • Reading directions. • Handwriting. • Finding word patterns. • Grammar rules. • Building formal test-taking skills. • Both workbooks are integrated with Reading Street.

  12. Reading • Phonics Surveys will be administered throughout the year. On most assessments, students must read 8 our 10 words correctly in about 3 seconds. Sample will be posted online. • DRA – Reading at level 24 by the end of second grade. Samples will be posted online.

  13. Reading Street • Varity of genres. • Read Aloud. • Short choral reading for expression. • Pair reading. • Reading plays. • Choice reading – student selected books. • Reading Response – responding to text with words.

  14. Reading Continued • Reading groups. • Independent books study.

  15. Japanese Reads… 46 hiragana, combinations, variations accurately by the end of 1st quarter. 46 katakana, combinations, variations accurately by the end of 2nd quarter. Grade level kanji (about 100). Grade level sentences fluently with comprehension. Writes… Hiragana, katakana and kanji letters in correct stroke orders. Katakana combinations and variations correctly. Grade level sentences with correct usage of hiragana, katakana and learned kanji letters. Speaks… Clearly and with appropriate volume. Tries to communicate in Japanese. Listens… To Japanese ATTENTIVELY. *NOELLA(3rd~7th), STAMP (7th~12th), AP Japanese (high school)

  16. Math • Bridges • Taught in both English and Japanese. • Units will flip-flop. • Both languages use “Number Corner” daily. • When English is not teaching a unit students will work on Science and/or use supplemental materials.

Weekly Schedule English (Blue Class): • Library: Monday • P.E.: Tuesday and Friday Japanese (Yellow Class): • Library: Wednesday • P.E.: Tuesday and Friday • Schedules posted outside of classrooms and online. Please note they do sometimes change due to re-teaching of material, assemblies, and other enrichments.
