Lit Bridging: Tasks • Focus of Term 2: mastering the language of literary analysis • Nature of tasks: • Short excerpts • Focus on the 3-step analysis: identify device, explain effect, discuss significance / meaning • Write mini paragraphs • Comments from tutors during consultation
Narrative Perspectives / Voices First person narrative: ‘I’ • Intimate knowledge of the character’s feelings / experience • Can the narrator be trusted? • If so, tendency for the reader to sympathise with the narrator / character? • May also repel the reader
Narrative Perspectives / Voices Third person narrative: ‘he’, ‘she’ • Who is the narrator? • The author? A narrator? Another character? • Can the narrator be trusted? • Is the narrator aware of his/her own prejudices / values? • Does the narrator influence you to sympathise with or reject the other characters?
Other devices: speech (diction/tone) • Is the language used formal or colloquial? technical or layman? (diction) • What tone is conveyed? Pompous? Objective? (refer to tone words in Paper 1 tutorial package) • What social / economic background can you deduce from the way a character speaks? • What character traits (eg. naïve, judgemental) are revealed through speech?
Other devices: imagery • What predominant imagery is associated with the characters (esp. the main character)? • What is the effect of such the use of such images?
