Egyptian architecture • Standard H-SS 6.2.5 • I will be able to describe the importance of Egyptian architecture when taking Cornell notes. • I will know and use the words architecture and pyramids.
Architecture • The art or practice of designing and constructing buildings. • There is architecture everywhere!

Egyptian architecture Temples for their gods • Most important types of building were temples for their gods and tombs for their pharaohs.
Ancient Egyptian Obelisks • Obelisks were important in the architecture of the ancient Egyptians/ They were placed, in pairs, at the entrance of temples. • A number of ancient Egyptian obelisks are known to have survived, • These obelisks are now dispersed around the world, and fewer than half of them remain in Egypt. • The obelisk symbolized the sun god Ra, and the Egyptians believedthat the god existed within the structure.
Tombs for pharaohs • The first type of tombs were called Mastaba tombs.
Pyramids • Step pyramids were then designed as tombs for pharaohs. • They believed that they would be a stairway to the gods.

Pyramids- A lasting achievement • The pyramids of Giza- Built by and for King Khufu, his son Khafre, and his grandson Menkaure. The tallest pyramid is the Great pyramid for Khufu. • The great sphinx guards the road to Khafre’s pyramid.
