Cyberbullying is on the rise! • 2006-2007 i-Safe study shows that 25% of high school students and 21% of 5-8 graders know someone who has been cyberbullied. • 52% of high school students have been cyberbullied. • 52% of high school students have cyberbullied someone. • 11% of high school students have been cyberstalked. Cyberbullied by the same person on more than one occasion.
New trend in cyberbullying • Student-on teacher cyberbullying is the latest trend. • The Charlotte-Mecklenburg School system had 4-5 cyberbullying cases in one year. All involved student-on-teacher cyberbullying.
What are states doing? • Many states are requiring schools to teach internet safety. • As of 2006, Virginia requires teaching internet safety and requires that the effort to curb cyberbullying must be written into the school’s “acceptable use policies.” • Texas Education Agency is developing a website to help teachers teach internet security and become aware of cyberbullying specifically.
What are schools doing? • Teaching students that there are consequences for their actions, both on and off campus. • Disciplinary actions at school and criminal charges if warranted. • Incorporating cyberbullying into the student code of conduct.
What can kids do? • Ignore messages from bullies. • Tell someone what is happening. • Let the police, cell phone provider, and internet provider know what is happening.
Web 2.0 and cyberbullying • Web 2.0 makes cyberbullying easier to do, and harder to detect. • Facebook and MySpace pose the biggest threat to students. • Emailing • Text messaging
