  5. Poverty Point – a large earth bird shaped mound that is three quarters of a mile in diameter. It was created by Indians. It is a landmark near Epps, Louisiana. It is the 2nd to largest mound in the United States.

  6. villages- are communities formed within a tribe or band.

  7. Louisiana Tribal Nations- Indian clans or units that the federal government and the state of Louisiana recognize as true Native American Indian tribes.

  8. pirogue- a light boat made by Indians

  9. wampum- beads pierced and strung used for money, ornaments or ceremonies

  10. powwows- big festivals for Native American tribes. They dance, eat and sing together to show the pride of their tribe and customs.

  12. Some present day Louisiana Native American Tribes are:Coushatta Tribe- There are two areas of Coushatta Tribes. One is near Kinder and the other is near Elton. Tunica Biloxi Tribe- This tribe settled along the Mississippi River and some eventually settled in Louisiana.

  13. United Houma Nations –Indians who live in six communities including Terrebonne and Lafourche Parishes. Caddo Indian Tribe– live near the Red River Part of Louisiana. A parish in our state is named after them.

  14. Chitimacha Tribe – Tribe located near Charenton, Louisiana. Known for the basket weaving. Choctaw Indian Bands – bands of Choctaw Indians in Louisiana include the Clifton, Jena, Apache and the Apache tribes.

  16. Did you know….. • Did you know that Louisiana had Indians long ago? The Native AmericanIndians were the first people to ever live in Louisiana. They lived in this state long before white men settled here. The Indians taught the white men many things.

  17. Did you know….. • Did you know here are several tribes that are still in Louisiana, but some don’t exist here anymore? Some Tribes that are still in Louisiana today are the Chitimacha, Coushatta, Caddo, Tunic-Biloxi,and theUnited HoumaTribes. Manytraditions and storieshave been passed down to Indians today.

  18. Did you know….. • Did you know that an Indian tribe is a larger group of Indians who share their culture and history. There are also bandsof tribes which have groups of four or five families in a tribe. They all lived in villagesor communities which formed within a tribe or band.

  19. Did you know….. • Did you know that Indians made piroguesand taught the white men build this light boat made. They also hunted,fished and trapped to survive. They lived in round or rectangle dwellings or homes. Louisiana Indians did not live in teepees.

  20. Did you know….. • Did you know that each group has special things about their tribes. Through the years, some things have changes for the Louisiana Indians, but some are working hard not to ever forget the stories and history of their ancestors.

  21. Did you know….. Did you know that that there was a large bird shaped mound in Louisiana? Well it is true! Louisiana has the second to largest American mound in the United States. The historical landmarkis called Poverty Point. The huge mound is near Epps, Louisiana. The beautiful site was built by the Poverty Point Indians very long ago.
