  1. Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder or ADHD One of the most prevalent childhood disorders, affecting between 3 and 5% of Australian students, is Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, or ADHD, one of the most contentious issues in children's health. ADHD is typified by difficulties maintaining focus and paying attention, "problem" behaviour, and hyperactivity. It was formerly known as Attention Deficit Disorder, or ADD. Boys are three times more likely to have ADHD than females, and symptoms typically appear before a child begins school. Sceptics may dismiss the condition as nothing more than youthful vitality and energy. Still, child behaviour specialists have long recognised that ADHD constitutes behaviours far outside the norm for young people. The optimal diagnostic criteria for ADHD are still being debated, especially given that it is known that a sizable portion of people might still experience adult-onset ADHD. Diagnostic criteria for children, adolescents, and adults are now included

  2. in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5). Another point of contention is that psychostimulant drugs, commonly used to treat ADHD, are thought to be addictive and harmful in adults. It is countered, however, that this is more of a problem with high doses and is less likely to happen with oral pills due to slow absorption. The appropriate diagnosis and treatment of the problem, according to many who have lived with ADHD or with a child who has the condition, has, they claim, completely changed their lives and allowed them to function normally.
