The University of Florida • The state’s largest university (and one of the nation’s largest) enrolls approximately 52,000 students per year. • 16 colleges • 150 research centers/institutes • Since 1985, a member of the Association of American Universities (AAU) - the top 60 public and private U.S. institutions.

  2. What the Economic Impact? • The annual economic impact of UF is in excess of $5.8 billion; • UF activities generate 77,000 statewide jobs, including more than 33,000 university employees and those employed by supporting businesses.

  3. Approximately 5,000 faculty members with distinguished records in teaching, research and service;More than 60 Eminent Scholar chairs; Nearly 60 faculty elections to the National Academy of Sciences, Engineering, or Arts and Science, the Institute of Medicine or a counterpart in a foreign nation.

  5. Awards include a Fields Medal, two Pulitzer Prizes, NASA’s top award for research and Smithsonian Institution’s conservation award.

  6. How is theAcademic Excellence Competitive Student Admission • The fall 2007 incoming freshman class had an average GPA of 4.10 and an average SAT score of 1295. • The freshman retention rate of 94 percent is among the highest in the country.

  7. Ranked first among AAU universities in bachelor’s degrees awarded to African American students; sixth in Ph.D.s to African Americans (2006-’07). • Ranked second in bachelor’s degrees awarded to Hispanic students; eighth in Ph.D.s to Hispanics (2006-’07).

  8. What is the Research & Discoveries • UF received $583 million in research contracts and grants in 2007; • Diverse areas include health care and citrus production. • Milken Institute named UF one of the top-5 in the country for the transfer of biotechnology to the marketplace (2006).

UF’s Cancer and Genetics Research Complex– with approximately 285,000 sq. ft. – is one of the largest research facilities in the state; • In collaboration with Orlando’s Burnham Institute, a 50,000-sq.-ft. research facility is being constructed. • Research areas will include diabetes, aging, genetics and cancer.

  11. UF is the only U.S. partner in the creation of the world’s largest telescope. The dome of the Gran Telescopio Canarias in Spain’s Canary Islands.

What are the Service Mission/Cultural Impact? • UF’s world-class cultural and artistic venues attract individuals from throughout the state and beyond • Florida Museum of Natural History and The Butterfly Rainforest (one of the world’s largest collections of butterflies and moths) • Harn Museum of Art • Phillips Center for the Performing Arts

  13. How is the Healthcare department? • Shands HealthCare includes nine hospitals: • 2 academic medical centers • 1 children’s hospital • 4 community hospitals • 2 specialty hospitals • UF’s focus on cancer includes a Cancer-Genetic Research Complex and a partnership with Moffitt Cancer Center; • A 500,000 sq-ft. cancer hospital is scheduled for completion in 2009.

  14. Shands is an official medical provider for NASA, serving as the medical support team for every launch and landing at the Kennedy Space Center.

  15. Statewide Outreach • UF’s statewide outreach includes: • Cooperative Extension Offices in all 67 counties; • 13 Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences Research and Education Centers.

Sustainability • One of UF’s goals of Zero Waste is to find ways to reduce campus waste to nearly zero by 2015; • In 2005, UF became the first university in the world to be designated a “Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary” (for environmental and wildlife management, resource conservation, waste management and outreach education); • One of the first universities in the U.S. to offer an Organic Agriculture undergraduate degree program.

  18. Athletics • Victories include 26 national team championships and more than 200 individual national titles; • UF is the first university in history to win national football and men’s basketball titles in the same year (2006); • UF won back-to-back national championships in men’s basketball in 2006-’07.

UF leads the Southeastern Conference (SEC) in team titles and Academic All-SEC recipients; • UF is one of only four schools in the National All-Sports Top 10 with an athlete graduate success rate above 89 percent (2006-’07); • The UF Athletic Association has contributed more than $34.4 million to the university’s academic endeavors.

Alumni • UF alumni reside in all 50 states and 130 foreign countries; • Nearly 100 Gator Clubs have formed throughout the world, including 10 foreign countries; • Famous alumni include: • John Vincent Atanasoff, co-inventor of the world’s first digital computer • Buddy Ebsen, actor • Bob Graham, senator and former FL governor • Forrest Sawyer, newscaster • Emmitt Smith, professional football great • Steve Spurrier, Heisman Trophy winner and football coach • Mel Tillis, singer • Bob Vila, home improvement/TV personality

Community Relations • UF’s Community Relations department interfaces with governments and business groups in the North Central Florida region, to address issues of concern to both UF and the community. • The UF Community Campaign (UFCC), an employee charitable program, annually donates more than $1 million to the community. • Community Relations hosts the annual Joint Civic Club Luncheon, as well as Community Campus Breakfasts throughout the year. The events feature speakers from UF and the community. • Meeting space for non-profit, civic and service organizations is provided at UF's Eastside Campus on Waldo Rd. – currently at no charge.   22. Private University Support“Florida Tomorrow” Capital Campaign • Goal: Raise $1.5 billion in private support by 2012 • Provides student, faculty and research funding for all UF colleges and units.
