Use of questions on household characteristics • Assets owned by household, dwelling material, crowding can be used to construct the wealth index and other indices of wealth/socioeconomic status • The assets in household questionnaire constitute a minimum set for constructing the “wealth index”
Use of questions on household characteristics • Information on possession of household assets, dwelling materials, water and sanitation, crowding are used in principal components analysis and households are categorized into quintiles of wealth • In addition, we have some further questions/recommendations for increasing the explanatory power of the wealth index
Optional questions to add • Optional questions to add: • Ownership of land for agriculture (HC11, HC12) • Ownership of livestock (HC13, HC14) • Addition of items of furniture to HC9 • Addition of more household appliances, for high, middle and low income households • May add country-specific animals (pigs, ducks etc)
