Part 1 - Panel • First part has to be completed as soon as we identify the eligible woman • The combination of cluster number, household number, and woman’s line number will be unique to each woman interviewed • Introductory sentence may be read if the woman has not been already interviewed for the household questionnaire

  3. Part 2 - Characteristics • Includes age, date if birth, education and literacy • Date and birth and age very important • Obtain month and year of birth, ask age and check for consistency

Part 2 - Characteristics • WSC Goal 7 • MDG Goal 2: Achieve Universal Education • Target 3: Ensure that, by 2015, children everywhere, boys and girls alike, will be able to complete a full course of primary schooling • Indicator 8: Literacy rate among 15-24 year olds • MICS Indicator No:60 • Proportion among women 15-24 who can read a short simple statement about everyday life • Women who can read the whole sentence, or have attended secondary or higher are considered literate

  5. Education and Literacy • A very powerful explanatory variable • Four sentences can be used and printed on a card • Use different sentences for women in the same household • Sentences for languages of interviews
