  1. Multiple Indicator Cluster SurveysMICS3Regional Training Workshop Security of Tenure and Durability of Housing

  2. MDG Goal 7 – Ensure Environmental Sustainability By 2020, to have achieved a significant improvement in the lives of at least 100 million slum dwellers Lead agency: UN Habitat

  3. Components of “Slum” Definition • Durability of housing • Sufficient living area • Security of tenure • Use of improved water source • Use of improved sanitation

  4. Questionnaire • Optional module designed to collect extra information towards the identification of “slum” • Two components (security of tenure & durability of housing) • Other components already covered in core modules • Module should be applied only in cities • UN Habitat has a random sample of cities where they advocate for the collection of data on slums

  5. Durability of Housing • A structure is defined as non-durable if • Floor material is “natural” AND there are two or more bad conditions identified OR • Conditions of vulnerability to accidents – dwelling surroundings OR • Dwelling located in or near hazardous areas

  6. Sufficient living area • A household is overcrowded if • More than three persons per sleeping room

  7. Security of tenure • Lack of security of tenure is defined as • Lack of title deeds OR • Perceived eviction

  8. Sanitation • Lack of use of improved sanitation facilities for excreta disposal

  9. Water • Lack of use of an improved water source

  10. Slum Household A household is considered a slum if Lack of durable housing OR Lack of sufficient living area (overcrowding) OR Lack of security of tenure OR Lack of improved water sources OR Lack of improved sanitation

  11. Issues • The idea is to compare characteristics of slum households and non-slum households • Poverty, education, infant mortality • Inclusion of module has implications regarding sampling (over-sampling the selected city, over-sampling from within city for slum areas)
