BEST Slow Pyrolysis Technology C4H4 Demonstration Plant Presented by Cordner Peacocke for Adriana Downie
BEST Pyrolysis Technology • Renewable electrical and thermal energy • Low grade, high ash feedstock capability • Modular, scaleable design • Value added solid product with developing market
Pilot Production Daisy ~ 10kg batch dry biomass El Toro ~ 40kg/hr dry biomass One in Australia, one in the USA Designed and Built in Australia – Shipped to USA Operated from Dec 2005- July 2006
Demonstration Plant Kiln Gasifier Drier Engine Scrubber C4H4 ~ 300kg/hour continuous biomass (dry basis)
C4H4 Process Flow Diagram 300 kg/hr Feed 0.6 MW PE 160 kW Electrical 75 kg/hr char 25% Syngas to Kiln Burner
BEST Demonstration Plant C4H4 ~ 300kg/hour continuous biomass (dry basis)
BEST Demonstration Plant Engine and generator running on Syngas
Data Collection Engine Control Panel 40 Thermocouples Syngas Analysers Data Loggers
Biomass Feedstock A complete range of biomass feedstocks have been evaluated Over 150 hours C4H4 runtime in total • Feedlot Manure • Poultry Litter • Paper Sludge • Cotton Trash • Woody weeds • Green Waste • Wood Waste • Rice Hulls • Corn Trash
C4H4 Gas Analysis • Gas analysis with GC (Gas Chromatograph) after gas clean-up • Greenwaste feed • Gas CV approximately 7 MJ/kg [range 6-12 MJ/nm3] • Gasifier gas approximately 3-4 MJ/kg depending on feed • Clean gas suitable for use in engines or boilers • Minimal ‘’tar’’ < 250 mg/m3 from hot gas filter prior to scrubbing • Renewable source of energy
Char Analysis • Char yield between 27 and 50% of feed (dry) • Activation to give high surface areas – up to 800 m2/g • Sampling possible directly from kiln or char activator • 50% Carbon from biomass remains in char – sequestration potential Chicken Litter Char Greenwaste Char Analysis
Char as a Soil Amendment Collaborative Char research with NSW Department of Agriculture and The University of New South Wales. • Soil structure (tensile strength) • Cation exchange capacity • Water holding capacity • Soil permeability • Nutrient retention • Enhance soil carbon • Liming value • Available nutrient content (NPK) • Reduced soil greenhouse gas release
Commercial Scale-Up 4000kg per hour of continuous biomass (dry basis)
Projects on the Horizon BioEnergy Park – Wisconsin • 2 tonne/hr modular unit • Dairy Manure and bedding as Feedstock • Outputs: Energy and Char • Waste Management Driven • Integrated Pelleting press unit • Final Design Phase Australian Paper Mill - Maryvale • 4 x 4 tonne/hr modular units • Paper Sludge and wood chips as feedstock • Outputs: Char • Waste Management Driven • Final Feasibility Stage
IAI Conference 2007 International Agrichar Initiative (IAI) Conference in Terrigal, NSW, Australia April 30th – May 2nd, 2007 We will be running a C4H4 demonstration day Go to: www.iaiconference.org For further information See you there
