  2. Topics • What is Effectiveness • Adult Learning Theory • Lesson Plans and Objectives • Learn by Doing • Recording Keeping

  3. What is Effectiveness? • You can effectively mess up anything! • To be effective it must be defined. • Don’t do it if you cannot measure it! • Effective training is active, not passive. • Effective training starts with proper planning.

  4. Adult Learning Theory • Adults are Self Directed. • Adults have acquired a large amount of knowledge. • Adults are ready to learn tasks that are relevant to their roles and responsibilities. • Adults are motivated to learn in order to solve or address problems. Source: DeSimone, Werner. Human Resource Development.

  5. Adult Training Methods • There is not one good way to learn everything. • Adults tend to learn by tying new information to existing knowledge. • Most adults learn better by doing and/or seeing. • Use methods based on your personal interactions. • Training will be more effective if you use and focus on real examples that relate to your organization.

  6. Lesson Plans • Lesson Plans: • are the foundation for any training; • they serve as a guild for the information to be taught; • define the topic and the expected outcome (objective); • allows the trainer to evaluate the participant's comprehension; • provide a quick reference of topics for regulatory inspections.

  7. Learn By Doing • Make all learning hands-on. • How can you make training realistic? • A few examples…

  8. Is there potential for a dust explosion at your place?

  9. Record Keeping • Why keep training records? • When a regulator visits your facility, your job is to get him in and out a fast as possible. • Keep all records in one or two organized binders. • Keep records in one central location.
