Steps for Analyzing Syntax • Purpose: What is the purpose? What is the point the author is trying to make? • Gettysburg Address: Lincoln wants to convince his audience that the soldiers have not died in vain, but rather to preserve freedom and democracy in the nation. • He builds intensity to make a point.
2. Methods: How does the author convey his purpose? • Lincoln uses persuasion created by rhetorical techniques. • Sentences: Lincoln uses a variety of sentence lengths to keep the passage flowing (compound, compound-complex, etc.) • B. Cumulative: The last sentence is very strong and leaves us with a lingering thought.
3. Punctuation- how does the author use punctuation? • Lincoln uses dashes (pauses) for emphasis; his punctuation helps create a rhythm
4. Repetition • Lincoln repeats “dedicated” many times in the passage in order to honor soldiers
5. Parallel Structure • Major form of syntax used by Lincoln; for emphasis and to build intensity • “of the people, by the people, for the people” • “we can not… we can not…”
6. Rhythm • Lincoln uses repetition, parallel structure, and dashes (punctuation) to create rhythm.
