SC29 WG1Resolutions/report highlights of 46th meeting • JBIG2 (14492) • Resolution 2 – Call for Comments on ISO/IEC 14492/AMD4 WD • WG1/JBIG committee calls for comments on proposed techniques for handling color representation described in the JBIG2 color amendment WD 1.0 (WG1N4824). • Resolution 3 – Call for Contribution on JBIG2/AMD4 test images • WG1/JBIG committee asks for contributions on test images for testing the work on JBIG2/AMD4 colour extensions. Of particular interest is a wide variety of colour halftones using different algorithms and from different manufacturers. The image set should include examples of both generated (ripped) images and scanned printed materials, and should also contain a mixture of halftones, text and line-art. SC29 WG1Resolutions/report highlights of 46th meeting • Resolution 30 – Approval of JPEG XR meeting report WG 1 approves the JPEG XR meeting report as contained in document WG1N4831. • Resolution 31 – Request for change of titles of some Parts of ISO/IEC 29199 WG 1 requests to change the titles of ISO/IEC 29199-1, 29199-2, 29199-4, and 29199-5 as follows: – ISO/IEC 29199-1 "Information technology – JPEG XR image coding system – System architecture". – ISO/IEC 29199-2 "Information technology – JPEG XR image coding system – Image coding specification". – ISO/IEC 29199-4 "Information technology – JPEG XR image coding system – Conformance testing". – ISO/IEC 29199-5 "Information technology – JPEG XR image coding system – Reference software". SC29 WG1Resolutions/report highlights of 46th meeting • Resolution 32 – Working Draft 3 for ISO/IEC TR 29199-1: JPEG XR image coding system – System architecture WG 1 authorizes the editors of ISO/IEC TR 29199-1 to finalize and submit Working Draft 3 of ISO/IEC TR 29199-1 as WG1N4832 by December 5, 2008, reflecting the decisions made at the 46th WG1 Busan meeting. • Resolution 33 – Consideration of non-overlapped tiling and related signal processing in JPEG XR In response to information presented at the 46th WG 1 Busan meeting, WG 1 requests NBs to study and consider the need for non-overlapped tiling and modifications of related signal processing aspects of JPEG XR image coding when preparing their responses to the ballot for FCD 29199-2. • Resolution 34 – Consideration of camera raw image coding support in JPEG XR In response to the information presented at the 46th WG 1 Busan meeting, WG 1 appoints Mr. Gen Sasaki, assisted by Dr. Gary Sullivan, to chair an ad hoc group to study the desirability and feasibility of standardization of camera raw image coding support for JPEG XR. Topics of this activity include – study of Bayer and non-Bayer pattern raw imagery (and implications of related pre-processing, color conversion, and de-mosaicing signal processing), – consideration of needs for support for camera metadata, and – outreach to camera manufacturers for input on the effort. The AHG is requested to make preparations to hold an AHG meeting during 16-17 February 2009 in the Tokyo area which will include participation by interested parties both within & external to WG 1. Video Signature Tools - 1 • MPEG-7 Visual Description Tools (specified by ISO/IEC 15938-3 and its amendments) consist of basic structures and Descriptors that cover visual features including: Colour, Texture, Shape, Motion, Localisation, Face Recognition • These visual features were designed to meet a range of description requirements, including content-based image and video search and retrieval. The existing visual features were designed to be widely applicable, but they share the characteristic of describing visual content, rather than describing images/videos as unique media entities. Video Signature Tools - 2 • MPEG has recently identified a need for such unique descriptions to support a number of new applications related to the detection of duplicated visual media. Experiments have shown that existing MPEG-7 visual descriptors do not fulfill all the requirements of a visual signature descriptor. The objective of this Call for Proposals is to solicit technologies which meet these needs. • The Video Signature Tools sought by this Call for Proposals are intended to complement the existing MPEG-7 Visual Descriptors by providing "fingerprints" to uniquely identify individual media items. The idea is that these new descriptors (the signatures) would be robust (unchanging) across a wide range of common editing operations, but would be sufficiently different for every item of "original" content to identify it uniquely and reliably – just like human fingerprints. • Typical applications for these new tools include: Media usage monitoring, copyright management, personal photo collection management, content linking, unknown content identification Prepared by Kate Grant for IEC TC100

New Challenges in Video Coding • Results of Workshop on New Directions in Video Coding(N10174) • All presentations will be made available in this document • Main conclusions: • Larger formats are appearing quickly • Video bitrate (when current compression technology is used) will go up faster than the network infrastructure will be able to carry economically • Both for wireless and wired networks • Next generation of video compression technology is needed with clearly higher compression capability than the existing AVC standard Prepared by Kate Grant for IEC TC100

Extract of requirements • Picture Formats • The HVC development effort will focus on a set of rectangular picture formats that will include all commonly used picture formats, ranging at least from VGA to 4Kx2K, and potentially extending to QVGA and 8Kx4K. • Picture formats of arbitrary size shall also be supported, within limits specific to each Level. The HVC codec shall support at least the same range of picture formats supported by the MPEG-4 AVC syntax. • Color Spaces and Color Sampling • The YCbCr color space 4:2:0, 8 bits per component shall be supported • YCbCr/RGB 4:4:4 should be supported. • Higher bit depth up to 14 bits per component should be supported Note: It will be further studied whether support for 4:2:2 color space is needed for progressively scanned video due to digital video standards used in studios. Same for wide gamut color. • Frame Rates • In general typical frame rates of 24 to 60 fps shall be supported. • The HVC codec shall be at least as flexible in terms of frame rate as the MPEG-4 AVC syntax which supports up to 172 frames per second (fps).
