One is recognition of the antigenic peptide/major histocompatibility complex (MHC) by the T cell receptor (TCR); another is antigen independent co-stimulation induced by interactions between co-signaling molecules expressed on antigen-presenting cells (APCs) and their T cell-expressed receptors.
