  4. Soviet Spheres of Influence • Soviet Union liberated Eastern Europe • Build up Eastern Europe according to Marxism • Sphere of influence • Stalin wanted to create buffer zone • “Iron Curtain” according to Churchill

  5. America Sounds the Alarm • 1946, Stalin’s Speech • 1947 Winter • Britain relinquishes colonies • America afraid Soviets will take British place on world stage • Step up to stop Soviet influence

  6. Truman Doctrine • Containment of Soviet Ideology • Marshall Plan • Support Europe and rest of the world • Create conditions unfavourable to Communism

  7. Problem of Germany • Split into 4 zones • Eventually amalgamate 3 western zones • Initially, everyone agrees on goals • Overtime, different ideas for Germany’s long term future • Questions arise about German autonomy and progress in the future • Questions divide former WWII allies
