  9. Today’s Objectives • Classifying matter- warm-up • Classifying matter notes • Matter salt/pepper mini-lab • Gum-drop models & grade • Classifying matter quiz

  10. Matter- review • Matter- anything that takes up space and has mass • States of matter: • solid (your chair, the table) • liquid (water, milk) • gas (the air you breathe, propane) • plasma (lightning, neon signs) • All matter is made up of atoms.

  11. States of Matter • States of matter: • Solid: atoms/molecules are tightly packed with little movement • Liquid: atoms/molecules can “flow” over and around each other • Gas: atoms/molecules are further apart and easily move around • Plasma: super-heated or charged gas; parts of the atom are ripped apart

  12. Today’s Thought • Let’s consider what early “scientists” thought about matter • Examples: • water • air

  13. Classifications of Matter Can be physically separated Can only be chemically separated

  14. an element -consists of only one kind of atom -cannot be broken down into a simpler type of matter by either physical or chemical means

  15. Elements

  16. a compound: -consists of atoms of two or more different elements bound together -can be broken down into a simpler type of matter (elements) by chemical means (but not by physical means) -has properties that are different from its component elements

  17. Compounds

  18. a mixture: -consists of two or more different elements and/or compounds physically intermingled -can be separated into its components by physical means, and -often retains many of the properties of its components.

  19. Mixtures

  20. Mini-Lab Activity • Mini-Lab: • water • salt • pepper • s/p mix • saltwater

  21. Mini-Lab Activity compound • Mini-Lab: • water • salt • pepper • s/p mix • saltwater compound mixture- heterogeneous mixture- heterogeneous mixture- homogeneous solution

  22. Classifying Matter Let’s do a bit of review using the SmartBoard

  23. Classifying Matter Questions Vocabulary words Formulas Main Ideas Possible Test Questions Notes Notes Notes Notes Notes Notes Notes Notes Notes Notes Summary of the notes and information learned

  24. Classifying Matter“Homework” • Due next class period (do this in your lab-book) • Bring to class a list of three examples out of these 4 categories of matter found in/around your home: • Element • Compound • Homogenous mixture • Heterogeneous mixture • Must have 12 total examples to share with class

  25. Classifying MatterCPS QUIZ

  26. Make it a great day Mustangs!
