Today’s Objectives • Classifying matter- warm-up • Classifying matter notes • Matter salt/pepper mini-lab • Gum-drop models & grade • Classifying matter quiz
Matter- review • Matter- anything that takes up space and has mass • States of matter: • solid (your chair, the table) • liquid (water, milk) • gas (the air you breathe, propane) • plasma (lightning, neon signs) • All matter is made up of atoms.
States of Matter • States of matter: • Solid: atoms/molecules are tightly packed with little movement • Liquid: atoms/molecules can “flow” over and around each other • Gas: atoms/molecules are further apart and easily move around • Plasma: super-heated or charged gas; parts of the atom are ripped apart
Today’s Thought • Let’s consider what early “scientists” thought about matter • Examples: • water • air
Classifications of Matter Can be physically separated Can only be chemically separated
an element -consists of only one kind of atom -cannot be broken down into a simpler type of matter by either physical or chemical means
a compound: -consists of atoms of two or more different elements bound together -can be broken down into a simpler type of matter (elements) by chemical means (but not by physical means) -has properties that are different from its component elements
a mixture: -consists of two or more different elements and/or compounds physically intermingled -can be separated into its components by physical means, and -often retains many of the properties of its components.
Mini-Lab Activity • Mini-Lab: • water • salt • pepper • s/p mix • saltwater
Mini-Lab Activity compound • Mini-Lab: • water • salt • pepper • s/p mix • saltwater compound mixture- heterogeneous mixture- heterogeneous mixture- homogeneous solution

Classifying Matter“Homework” • Due next class period (do this in your lab-book) • Bring to class a list of three examples out of these 4 categories of matter found in/around your home: • Element • Compound • Homogenous mixture • Heterogeneous mixture • Must have 12 total examples to share with class
