Classifying Matter EQ: Compare and contrast substances and mixtures.
Anything that has mass and takes up space • In other words, it has both mass and volume • Everything you see and some things you cannot see, like air What is matter?
Space • Sound • Light • Forces • Energy What is NOT matter?
Building block of matter • Made of protons (+), neutrons (o), and electrons (-) • Protons and neutrons in nucleus • Electrons in electron cloud What is an atom?
Matter whose composition is always the same • Ex. Sugar is always C6H12O6, water is always H2O, and oxygen is always O2. • Two types: elements and compounds Substances
Substance made of just one type of atom • Exist individually, such as aluminum atoms, or in groups, such as pairs of oxygen atoms Elements
Substance with 2 or more different elements bonded together but always with the same formula • Formula: symbols and #s that represent compound • H2O • CO2 • C6H12O6 • Different properties than elements that make them up Compounds
Matter that varies in composition • 2 or more substances blended together physically (therefore can be separated, like sand and water) • Two types: heterogenous and homogenous • Heterogenous: not evenly mixed • Two samples can have different amounts of substances (ex. 2 buckets of sand from the beach) • Homogenous: evenly mixed • Also called solution • Two samples will have same amounts of substances (ex. 2 bottles of Gatorade) Mixtures
Use the following 7 terms to create a graphic organizer showing how matter is classified. • Add at least one picture and at least one exampleto each. • Be sure to use COLOR on this page! • Matter ** Substances ** Elements ** Compounds • Mixtures ** Heterogenous ** Homogenous Left side activity
