Silver Training Campcraft Duke of Edinburgh Hillary Award
Campcraft • Check your selected spot • Flat, well-drained and protected from wind • Are there pathways in and out of camp? • Familiarise yourself with the route to toilets in case you need them during the night • Create defined areas for cooking, communal activities etc
Campcraft – improvising a campsite • Open ground or a pine forest (sheltered open ground) • Check map for suitable flat areas big enough for your party • Feel comfortable about your choice of campsite • Don't destroy vegetation (bend branches out of the way if necessary) • Use what you have and natural features to create shelter especially if you don't have tents • Leave no trace
Campcraft – Arriving at Night • If you know you will arrive at night - try arranging your pack earlier in the day so everything you need is to hand • Have a head torch handy • Make sure you have time for a hot meal • If unplanned - discuss what went wrong and how to avoid this next time
Campcraft – staying in huts • Always buy your hut tickets before you go (DOC offices, Dwight’s, Lower Hutt Information Office) • Some huts cost more than one ticket per person • Always fill in the required portion of the ticket and place it in the box in the hut. Tie the remaining portion to your pack. • Always leave the hut cleaner than you found it. • Bring in more wood to replace any you use. • Be considerate of other hut users
