Year 4 Summer 1 2014 Literacy In literacy, we will be looking closely at instructions and explanations, where children will learn about instructions and explanations based around the glitzy world of the game show! They will learn about features of explanations before going on to write their own based on a game show with a special treat at the end! They will also do plays and dialogues, where children will define proverb & work out the meanings, and identify & use adverbs & powerful verbs. They will create characters using description, stage directions & dialogue and compare dialogue & playscripts, finally writing and performing two playscripts based on a proverb & on a Roald Dahl chapter. We will be ending by looking at traditional poems, by exploring the poems of Robert Louis Stevenson and writing a class poem using rhyming couplets. We will revise verb tenses and learn about prepositions. Then we will explore the poem Windy Nights and learn it by heart and produce a class book containing poems written by the children.
Maths This half term, Year 4 will be learning: torecognise fractions and mixed numbers, to recognise equivalence of simple fractions, to compare and order fractions; locate fractions on number line, to recognise equivalence of decimal and fraction forms of 1/2s and 1/10s, to round 3-digit numbers to 10 or 100, to round money to £, to make estimates, to multiply/divide integers by 10 or 100, to multiply by 5 or 20 by halving/doubling, to subtract HTU – TU, HTU – HTU, to check results with inverse calculation, to subtract HTU – TU, HTU – HTU by standard method, to find differences by counting on, to understand relation between +/-, to know ×9 multiplication/division facts, to recognise patterns and relationships, to use 8-point compass, measure clockwise/anticlockwise turns, to know angles are measured in degrees and to know relationship between degrees and right angles.
Science In Science this half term we will be learning about changes of state. We will be classifying solids, liquids and gases, describing similarities between solids and classifying different items. This will lead onto describing similarities between liquids, measuring accurately using volumes of liquid and using results to conclude. We will discover that some liquids flow quicker than others, and find ways to measure viscosity in different liquids. Then, explain how to turn water into ice, and ice to water. The state that ice melts when left in a room or held in the hand will be investigated, and we will describe what happens to metal or lava to turn it into a liquid. Next, we will separate mixtures of solids, and of solids and water, and learn about sieving, leading onto filtering. We will finish the topic by investigating dissolving. We will also explain why salt and sugar cannot be seen when dissolved in water.
Topic This term we will focus on local history, mainly Burnham. More specifically, we will focus our studies on the physical and social aspect of change over the last 100 years.We will look at how businesses have changed, as well as how streets and housing have changed. We will look at St. Peter’s church and Burnham High Street itself. This will be a really good opportunity for children to learn about how we have come to be as we are today, and for the children to develop ideas about how it might be in the future.
Music We will look into different rhythms and styles of percussion. We will discover a variety of instruments and perform as groups and as a class. Art/DT Pablo Picasso will be our art study for the next 5 weeks. We will research the life of Picasso, and look at the different styles of painting that he did during his life. We will come to terms with Cubism, and draw in a similar style using pastels. We will finish by drawing a still life picture using charcoal.
RE For the next 5 weeks, the children in Year 4 will be looking at ‘Jesus as a Servant and a King’. In this unit, children will learn: • The events of Psalm Sunday and how different character responded to this event. • The story of the washing of the disciples feet. • The reflect on Christian ideas about servant hood and Kingship in relation to Jesus. • To begin to consider their own ideas on serving others. • The symbolism of different crosses and how they demonstrate Christian convictions about the meaning of the death of Jesus.
PE and games This summer we will be learning how to play tennis. We will learn the forehand and the backhand, and the rules of tennis. We will be doing target based activities to practise our skills, and, of course, we will be playing tennis! Year 4 will also be doing athletics. Running and fitness will be the focal area this side of half term, with a chance to explore team events also. PSHE Right and wrong. What is right and wrong? We will be looking at choices and consequences. Different dilemmas and situations will be discussed and role played, and we will Touch upon individualism and role models.
PE days are Monday and Friday. Please make sure you have the correct kit, labelled and in school all week. Earrings must be removed for PE.
