Year 5 Summer 1 2014 Literacy This half term we will finish off our work on stories from other cultures, based around Dragon Slayer, an adventure story set in China. We will also look at non-chronological reports, linked to our work on Dragon Slayer and then spend time reading and writing myths and legends, based on our work on the Ancient Greeks. We will carry on doing regular spelling, handwriting and guided reading sessions and working on our writing targets.

Maths This half term we will be; • Rounding, adding & subtracting money and decimals • Multiplying fractions and converting improper fractions • Comparing decimals, fractions and percentages • Practising long multiplication and formal methods for adding and subtracting 5 digit numbers • Translating 2D shapes using Coordinates • Working on negative numbers for temperature • Revising line graphs and probability
Science In Science this half term we need to continue with keeping healthy , we have covered healthy eating and now we will make links with PSHE and learn about the effects of drugs, puberty, alcohol and smoking and exercise on the human body.
History/Geography In history we will be learning and discovering all about the Ancient Greeks, starting off with a visit to the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford to find out how the Olympics started. We will share our work from the holidays about the geography of Greece and be presenting this in class in the first week of the term.
Music Each week we will sing new and old songs as part of whole school singing, and improve our ability to perform different pieces to an audience. We will learn about Clusters through a unit of work called Journey Into Space. Then we will compose music which reflects different video clips relating to Space travel and moon landings. Art/DT This half term we will make Greek vases in art, out of papier maché.
PE/Games We will start this half term by doing Striking and Fielding games, moving on to practising different Athletics skills after half term. We will choose a new club for Friday afternoons. PSHE/RRS Our theme for this half term will be Good to be me which is all about controlling feelings and behaviour. We will also make links with our Science work on the effect of exercise, drugs and alcohol and puberty on our bodies.
RE This half term we will focus on the Bible. We will learn about why the Bible is important to Christians and that the Bible is made up of different types of writing and has a variety of authors. We will also learn how Christians use the Bible as a source of inspiration and will study some Bible stories and find out their significance to believers. ICT This unit will teach the children to become cryptographers (code crackers). This unit is to help the children to understand more about communicating information securely (encrypting and decrypting, especially online), how communication over distances was achieved in early days and consider what makes a secure password.
