  1. GF-5 Emissions System Compatibility Improvement Team Chris Engel Report to ILSAC / OIL 9/28/06

  2. Highlights of August 8th Meeting • Meeting was 8/8/06 at 10:10 am in Ann Arbor at Toyota Technical Center. • SWRI, Ben Weber, gave an oral report on the status of their catalyst durability test. • Lubrizol (Ewa Bardasz) gave a report on the Ford/LZ work on low impact vs. conventional ZDDP. • Andy Ritchie Infineum presentation to ESCIT on 8/8/06. Keep P at 0.08% max for GF-5. • Lubrizol (Lew Williams) presented a proposal for a P retention equation. • JAMA emissions compatibility work report by Hannah Murray. • Oronite (Eric Olsen) reported that the Seq VIB shows reasonable scale for P volatility. • Afton (Greg Guinther) presented an update on their ACT (Afton Catalyst Test) catalyst durability fired engine test. • Afton (Greg Guinther)gave a second report on P retention from sequence tests. The conclusion of that report is Phosphorus volatility and retention is related to viscosity grade and factors which influence oil consumption. • Ciba (Mouhcine Kanouni)is willing to run P volatility ref oils in their bench test to determine correlation to the field. • Ted Selby reported on the most recent work on PEI at 165 and 120 C. Work continues on trying to demonstrate correlation between PEI and field/dyno testing. See the TMC web site, www.astmtmc.cmu.edu for the presentations.

  3. Action Items From August 8th Meeting • All: Seq test. Each ESCIT member needs to be thinking of what potential test's we can live with in GF-5. • All: Determine the most promising volatility test. • Additive and Oil: Determine R and R for their oils. Report at next meeting on results. • Mike McMillan / Ben Weber: Create new GF-5 timeline. • Scott Ellis: Developan engine test that will be a meaningful option to use in GF-5. Work with Greg Guinther at Afton. • Ewa Bardesz, Mike Riley: Ford and LZ will consider ways to publish this work in more detail. • Greg Guinther: Define how to handle bulk oil consumption. • Lew Williams : Determine what detergent metal to use when there is more than one detergent metal • Greg Guinther: Test a limited number of oils in their ACT test that have field correlation data. • Mouhcine Kanouni: Ciba is willing to run P volatility ref oils in their bench test to determine correlation to the field. • Greg Guinther: Send samples of their various "control" oils to Ciba. • Lew Williams: Send samples of their various "control" oils to Ciba. • Ted Selby: Continue PEI development. • Chris Engel: Set up next meeting from11:30-4:30 in Detroit after the ILSAC/OIL meeting which is from 8-11 on 9/28/06

  4. Emission Protection Strategies 0.07 P Max: 12.5% ESCIT Test with Appropriate Limits 20-60% Improvement in Catalyst Protection 0.06 P Max: 25.0% 0.05 P Max: 37.5%

  5. A Win/Win Situation? • Through an ESCIT test you can retain cost benefit of ZDDP, proven wear protection, proven oxidation stability and your freedom to formulate without sacrificing emissions protection. • Developing a retention or volatility test is the obvious priority of our team- and should be a highlight of the GF-5 Development process. • However, it should be noted that lowering the phosphorous limit is the only fool proof / tamper proof to truly protect emissions system durability.

  6. Comments • Potential Tests • Elemental Ratio’s in a Sequence Test • Southwest Dyno Test /Afton Test Sequence • PEI or CIBA Type Bench Test • Should we choose to pursue elemental ratios in a sequence test, significant issues remain: • Which Sequence Test? (IIIG Preferred) • Relationship of Sequence Test to Vehicles in Field • Ca Free Oils • Formulating Effects • Repeatability and Reliability • Historical Trends / Data Analysis • Appropriate Limits

  7. New Timeline Extra Year: Must recommend a volatility test by 1st quarter 2008.

  8. Today’s Agenda • Lew Williams: Notes From Last Meeting /Action Items • Chris Engel: Test and Timeline Discussion • Bill Buscher for Scott Ellis: Southwest Test Update • Ewa Bardesz: Ford / Lubrizol Field Test Update • Andrew Ritchie: Infineum Sequence Test Data • Eric Olsen: Oronite Sequence Test Data • Doug Deckman: ExxonMobil ZDDP Type and Sequence Test • Greg Gunthier: Afton Update • Mouhcine Kanouni: Ciba Update • Ted Selby: New PEI Data Next meeting will be this afternoon from 12:30 - 4:30 PM here in this room. Everyone is welcome.
