  16. Assignment --Simulation Exercises Work in groups. Role-play the following situations with your partners, acting as the Chinese speaker, English speaker and the interpreter respectively. One group will be invited to perform in class. Situation A You are a secretary in the Company Q&Q. A visitor from New York is coming for a five-day conference. You go to the airport to welcome him, In the evening you take the visitor to a western food restaurant where your manager welcomes him on behalf of your company. Try to entertain your visitor. Situation B You are the marketing manager of Company Avon and you are visiting the Chinese Company Q&Q for a five-day conference. At the airport, a Chinese lady receives you, takes you to the hotel to check in and talks to you about your itinerary. Then, in the evening, you have dinner with the Chinese company manager in a Chinese food restaurant.

  17. Points to Remember • Decoding is the first step in interpreting. • Both CI and SI require not ordinary listening but active listening. • Interpreters listen to meaning instead of words, they listen for both content and attitude, and they listen with ears, eyes, heart. • To improve the efficiency of active listening, interpreters are supposed to sit or stand comfortably upright; observe the speaker’s body language; and try to visualize the words.
