  1. Terms to Know • Gascon– a person from Gascony, an area in the South West of France. Cyrano is from this area. Gascons are a bit rough around the edges and proud of it. • “Comte” – a count (as in Compte de Guiche). A nobleman • Ballade – A 28-line poem written in a particular meter and rhyme scheme. It consists of 3 8-line stanzas, each ending with a refrain, and a 4-line concluding stanza called an envoi. • Extempore: improvised or spur-of-the-moment • D’Artagnon – a great military officer and the main character in Dumas’s novel The Three Musketeers. Look for references (allusions!) to this piece of literature throughout Cyrano. • Panache – literally, a plume, or decorative feather. It has come to mean style, reckless courage, and flamboyant manner. • Patron – one who supports the arts/ an artist. Cyrano refuses to have a patron. WHY??
