Adolescents on MySpace: Who, What, When, Where, Why and How Julia Rifa, Cheyenne Cummings, and Dr. Larry Rosen California State University, Dominguez Hills Introduction MySpace has become a haven for adolescents with estimates that nearly 50% of the 175 million MySpacers are under 18.  Four studies were completed during February 2006, June 2006, September 2006 and March 2007 with online interviews of 241, 267, 342, and 482 adolescents, respectively.  The studies assessed MySpace usage, parenting style, limit setting and monitoring, sexual solicitation and exposure, media perceptions, and psychological, attitudinal and behavioral measures. This poster presentation examines characteristics of MySpace users including demographics, usage, friends, and attitudes and documents how MySpace use has changed over the year during which MySpace grew at an astronomical rate, adding more than 100,000 users per day. Hours per Week MySpace This graph depicts the amount of time spent on MySpace on a weekly basis. As shown the average time spent on MySpace is about 10-12 hours a week with no increase or decrease across the studies. Computer Location Over the course of the three studies it was found that almost half of the teens on MySpace have their computer in the bedroom. Disclosure In this graph it is clear that personal information is being disclosed over the Internet. Across the three studies giving school name, IM, e-mail address, and full name seem to be the most common forms of information disclosed. This may indicate that most teens on this networking site have 100 or more friends, which is only possible in a virtual world. First Joined MySpace It is apparent that across the four studies individuals have been on MySpace longer. From study 1 we can see that the majority of the individuals on MySpace are mostly new (6 months – 1 year). As we move along thru studies 2, 3, and 4 we can see an increase in the amount of time teens have been members of MySpace. MySpace Use MySpace is a place where teens engage in many activities. This graph shows what activities are the most popular on this web site. We found that teens are mostly talking about music, talking to others with common interests, and talking about movies, among other topics.
