What is Full Depth Reclamation? 1) Full Depth Reclamation is a rehabilitation process in which the full flexible pavement section and a pre-determined portion of the underlying materials (base and/or sub-grade) are uniformly pulverized and blended resulting in a homogeneous stabilized base course.
Why Utilize Full Depth Reclamation? By addressing the entire pavement section, FDR is able to correct delinquent cross sections, increase the load-bearing strength of the base and use 100% of the existing materials. Substantial savings can be realized while meeting environmental goals and guidelines. 1)
Reasons to utilize Full Depth Reclamation? • Completely eliminates an existing cracking pattern • Allows for cross section Corrections • Cost effective when compared to total reconstruction • Faster and easier than total reconstruction • Facilitates road widening • More uniform compaction of processed material • Environmentally friendly • Conserves natural resources 1)
General Overview of the Full Depth Reclamation Process • Survey the project to gain a clear overview of the work to be performed. • 2) Take Core Samples to determine the composition of the road. Take samples at the best and worst portions of the road. • 3) Formulate a plan to address the project including the weakest areas of the road. Select additives (cement, calcium chloride, emulsion, foamed bitumen, fly ash, etcetera to assist with strengthening the base. 1)
General Overview of the Full Depth Reclamation Process 4) Evaluate the road width and formulate grinding pattern 5) Remove any organic materials (grass, bushes) from shoulders 6) Ensure and correct proper water drainage from ditches.
General Overview of the Full Depth Reclamation Process • 7) Grind road and predetermined depth of base material utilizing additional aggregates or additives to insure maximum strength of the finished base. In some instances multiple passes are required • Compact ground roadway with pad-foot roller • 9) Shape roadway with motor grader to desired grade
General Overview of the Full Depth Reclamation Process • 10) Compact roadway with smooth drum or rubber tired roller to finish recycled base. • 11) Apply “Fog Seal” asphalt emulsion or final additive to allow water to shed off top of roadway and not soak in. • 12) Apply Final Additive, Chip Seal or Overlay.
