  2. What are depressants ? • Depressants are drugs that depress or slow down nerve activity.

  3. Types of Drugs Found • Barbiturates • Tranquilizers • Methaqualone • Alcohol

  4. Physical Effects • Decrease in heart rate • Blood pressure • Drunken behavior • Poor coordination • Blurred vision

  5. Psychological Effects • Calmness • Reduced anxiety • Lowered alertness • Mental confusion • Impaired reasoning & judgment

  6. Long Term & Short Effects • Death • Mood changes • Sleepiness • Slowed reaction time • Mental confusion • calmness

  7. Withdrawal Symptoms • Restlessness • Nausea • Difficulty sleeping • Trembling • Paranoia • Convulsions

  8. What forms do the drugs come in and how they are taken? • Tablets • Needles that can be used intravenously • Liquid

Criminal charges for using, selling and possession • Driving while intoxicated can send a person to jail for year and their license may be revoked depending on how many times the drug was abused while driving. • Selling drugs in school can get a person expelled • Minors can lose their license for driving under the influence • Aggravated Driving While Intoxicated (A-DWI) -$1,000 - $2,500 fine, license revoked for at least one year

  10. Effects of Overdose • Shallow breathing • Clammy skin • Suicides • Rapes • Weak • Coma

  11. Recovery Treatment • Groups are formed to help people that are addicted to depressants, especially alcohol. These groups include MADD (Mothers against Driving Drunk), SADD (Students against Drunk Driving). Rehab is also a popular means for recovery.
