Common Depressants • Benzodiazepines (Tranquilizers) • Barbiturates • Hypnotics • Alcohol
Benzodiazepines (tranquilizers), Barbiturates and Hypnotics • Often referred to as sedatives • When used as prescribed… • Can relieve anxiety • Can reduce muscle tension • Can help with Insomnia (sleeplessness)
Benzodiazepines (tranquilizers), Barbiturates and Hypnotics Cont. • When misused or abused… • Physical dependency (Addiction) • Can lead to sleep disturbances/problems • Can cause respiratory depression/arrest • Can result in death
Alcohol • The most commonly abused depressant! • Effects nearly every system in the body • Affects adults and teens somewhat differently
Physical effects of alcohol • Short-term • Bad breath (smells of alcohol) • Increased sweating (body Odor) • Increased stomach acid • Nausea vomiting
