What are depressants? • Depressants are drugs that inhibit the functions of the central nervous system. (CNS) • Examples: • Ethyl alcohol • Benzodiazepines • (Prescribed to treat Anxiety and sleep disorders)
What are the effects? • Some effects of depressant are: (Short term effects) • Drowsiness • Have the potential to be addictive • Calm Nerves/ Relaxation • Sleeplessness • Low blood pressure • Slow down heart rate/ breathing • Poor concentration • Fatigue • Suicidal thoughts
What are the effects? • Some effects of depressant are (long term effects): • Chronic fatigue • Anxiety or panic • Depression • Heart problems
How does it impact teens? • Alcohol is a depressant. In a small amount, alcohol can create a sense of relaxation. However, large amount can alters a person's perceptions, emotions, movement, vision, and hearing (intoxication.) Under peer pressure or stress teenagers often drink to release stresses. Those who drink alcohol at an early age often become dependent on alcohol. The reason is because our brain isn’t fully development therefore it can affect our brain development leading to alcohol addiction. • Interesting Facts: • .A person who starts drinking between age 11 and 14, for example, has a 16% chance of becoming an alcoholic 10 years later. • The odds are just 1% for someone who starts at 19 or older, according to one large study.
