Barbiturates: Amytal, Downers, Nembutal, Phenobarbital, Reds, Red birds, Red devils, Seconal, Tuninal, Yellowjackets • cause relaxation or sleepiness • person may appear drunk or intoxicated • people are prescribed for seizures or pain • 1 in 10 people who abuse or overdose on barbiturates WILL DIE from heart or lung complications
Barbiturates: Symptoms of Abuse • Altered level of consciousness • Difficulty in thinking • Drowsiness or coma • Faulty judgment • Incoordination • Shallow breathing • Slowness of speech • Sluggishness • Slurred speech • Staggering Ultimately: • permanent memory loss • coma or death
Benzodiazepines:Rohypnol, Roofies, Flunitrazepam, Ruffies, Roches, R-2, Valium used in medicine for treating anxiety disorders • Aggressiveness • high energy • increased disinhibition • Drowsiness • loss of memory • loss of consciousness • loss of motor control • headaches • dizziness • nightmares afterwards *withdrawal can be life threatening due to risk of seizures*
Benzodiazepines: Rohypnol • Commonly known as "roofies" • 'date rape drug' • Not legally available in the US • 7-10x stronger than Valium • sedation • muscle relaxation • reduction in anxiety • Effects begin within 15-30 min • Effects last about 6 hours • Strong amnesia after drug wears off
Rohypnol, a 'club drug' ? • Flagged as dangerous in club situations • White tablet that dissolves without color or taste • Now formulated as a caplet that is light green with a blue core • The manufacturer instituted this change to help identify tampered drinks at clubs. When dissolved in clear liquids the blue core will turn the clear liquid to blue. • when dissolved in darker-colored liquids, the blue dye may not be noticeable • Generic versions of Rohypnol may not contain the blue dye
