What is Health? • Health is a combination of physical, mental/emotional and social well-being • These parts together build good overall health • These three parts make a triangle with equal sides and are connected • If you ignore one side, your total health suffers- if you improve one side, they all benefit
Physical Health • Physical health is measured by what you do as well as what you do not do • Must avoid tobacco, alcohol and other drugs • Being physically healthy means taking care of your body
Mental/Emotional Health • Mental/emotional health is measured by the way you think and express your feelings • Positive thinking is a good way to feel better when you feel sad- focus on good things • If you are having problems or feel overwhelmed, talk to friends or a trusted adult
Social Health • Good social health means communicating well with and having respect for others • It also means building relationships with people you can trust and who can trust you • It is how well you get along with others
Healthy Habits and Wellness • When you take care of your health triangle and all three sides are balanced, wellness is achieved • Wellness is a state of well-being or total health • Can improve wellness by having good health habits • Habit is a pattern of behavior that you follow almost without thinking • Your health triangle can give a snapshot of how healthy you are right now
Lesson 2Influences on Your Health • There are factors that affect your health: • Heredity is the process by which biological parents pass traits to their children • Environment is the sum of your total surroundings- where you live, school, air quality
Factors that Affect Your Health • Culture is the collected beliefs, customs and behaviors of a group • Peers are your friends and other people in YOUR age group • Peers are an especially important influence during your teen years- peer pressure • Media- advertisements- not all media information is reliable • Technology can find disease and give information
Your Health Choices and Behaviors • Behavior is the way you act in the many different situations and events in your life • Knowing the consequences of your choices and behaviors can help you take responsibilty for your health • Attitude is what you believe or feel about someone or something
Lesson 3Building Health Skills • A key to good health is the prevention of illness and injury • Prevention is practicing health and safety habits to remain free of disease and injury • Protective gear, washing hands, seat belts
Health Skills • Health skills help you become and stay healthy- helps improve health triangle • There are 10 Health Skills: • 1. Accessing Information- Know how to get reliable information • 2. Practicing Healthful Behaviors- Taking action to reduce risks and protect yourself against illness and injury- sleep • 3. Stress Management- Learning to cope with challenges that put a strain on you mentally and emotionally
Health Skills • 4. Analyzing Influences- Your recognize many factors influence your health • The FIRST step in analyzing an influence is to identify the source- Second think about their motives • 5. Communication is the clear exchange of ideas and information- Good communication includes telling others how you feel and listening to others
Health Skills • 6. Refusal Skills- helps you say no in an effective way • 7. Conflict Resolution Skills- helps you find a solution that is fair to everyone involved • 8. Decision Making- thinking through problems and finding healthy solutions • 9. Goal Setting- Plan for the future and work to see your plans through • 10. Advocacy- to support or speak out in favor of health- you encourage other people to live healthy lives
Lesson 4Making Responsible Decision • Decisions are choices you make • Some decisions are small which others have serious consequences (results) • Some decisions have risk or the chance of harm or loss • When you make a decision, you should understand the short-term and long-term consequences of safe, risky and harmful behaviors
Decision-Making Process • There are 6 steps in the process: • 1.State the Situation- what are the facts and who else is involved • 2. List the Options- cover all the possibilites and ask others for suggestions
Decision-Making Process • 3. Weigh the Possible Outcomes- HELP • H (healthful)- what are the health risks • E (ethical)- does the choice reflect what you and your family believe to be ethical or right • L (Legal)- does it violate any laws • P (parent approval)- do your parents approve • For some decision you should think of the cumulative risks which means the addition of one risk factor to another, increasing the chance of harm- no seat belt and speeding
Decision-Making Process • 4. Consider values- beliefs you feel strongly about that help guide the way you live • 5. Make a decision and act on it- be comfortable with your decision and take action • 6. Evaluate the decision- look at results- if not what you wanted, find another way to deal with the situation
Lesson 5Setting Health Goals • What do you dream of achieving in you lifetime? • Goals are something you hope to accomplish- broad or specific • Short-term Goals- plan to accomplish in short amount of time • Long-term Goals- hope to achieve within a period of months or years • Can be both- want to be a doctor- get good grades now
Choosing Goals • Being aware of your skills and interests will help you choose goals you can achieve • Is the goal realistic? Challenge yourself- aim high and believe in yourself • To achieve all your goals, you should have a plan • Specific goals, list steps to reach goal, get help from others, evaluate your progress by checking PERIODICALLY, reward yourself after achievement-
